The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland. Elevated PSA levels can indicate prostate inflammation, enlargement, or prostate cancer. This test is commonly used as a screening tool for prostate cancer and to monitor prostate health, particularly in men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate conditions.

FAQ Overview

Commonly Asked Questions

What is a PSA Test?

The PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood, which can indicate prostate cancer, inflammation, or enlargement.

Why is this test important?

PSA screening helps detect prostate cancer early, enabling timely treatment and monitoring prostate health.

What can affect my test results?

Recent ejaculation, exercise, prostate infections, and medical procedures can temporarily elevate PSA levels.

Why should men over 40 consider this test?

The risk of prostate conditions increases with age, and early detection can improve outcomes for prostate-related diseases.

Why is PSA used to screen for prostate cancer?

PSA is a protein produced by the prostate, and elevated levels can indicate potential cancerous changes, prompting further medical evaluation.
